The Pitch: Boxee is one of the first open-source media centers for Mac OS X and Linux operating systems, allowing non-PC users to enjoy a host of video content from their favorite websites.
Pros: Not only can you watch TV shows, movies, and streaming content through Boxee, socializing becomes easy with the large group of users. Plus, it can upscale standard resolution videos to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. Though currently in the alpha testing stage, Boxee plans on releasing a set top box in 2009.
Cons: There’s no Windows support and you need to be accepted as an alpha tester to use the software. It can’t play DRM-protected files.
Recommendation: For Mac OS X and Linux users, Boxee may be the ultimate media center, but Windows users are left hanging. Since there is no real hardware (yet), I do not recommend this product for the next round.
