The Pitch: The DMP-BD55 promises exceptional color reproduction close to the original with the Reference Chroma Processor Plus video processor. The Panasonic BD55 features a Dolby TrueHD Audio Decoder, which supports the 7.1-channel surround sound newly adopted in Blu-ray discs. Thanks to a 192kHz, 24-bit audio digital-analog converter and high quality insulators, electrolytic capacitors, copper-foil film capacitors, and ultra-low-impedance electrolytic capacitors, the BD55 delivers the same kind of exciting surround effect and lifelike ambiance as today’s finest cinemas.
Pros: The high-end image quality, the full support of Blu-ray audio capabilities, and BD-Live support make this Blu-ray player a solid choice. The enhanced audio components should please even the pickiest audiophiles. At less than $400, the BD55 is also affordable considering what it offers.
Cons: BD-Live has more use if you have a hard drive to store content. The Sony PS3 can make more out of this feature than the BD55.
Recommendation: Blu-ray is kind of stuck and not getting much market traction, though this is admittedly a nice player. However, being nice isn’t enough, and this player brings nothing new to the table, so it should not continue as a semifinalist.
