The Pitch: Targus aims to make passing through airport security one step easier, by creating a bag that eliminates the need to remove your laptop for X-ray scanning. The Zip-Thru Corporate Traveler Case is designed to split down the middle, isolating the laptop on one side. It fits laptops up to 15.4 inches wide and weighs just 3.74 pounds. It has a dedicated file section, zip-down workstation with business card holder, pen loops, key clips, and multiple accessory compartments.
Pro: It does what it says and, more importantly, TSA employees seem to be familiar with it. There’d be nothing worse than buying this bag, only to have an agro security official insist that you remove your laptop anyway! It’s lightweight yet sturdy, with Targus’ patented SafePort Air Cushion System to protect your precious laptop, should you drop your bag as you sprint to the plane. The many accessory compartments will be popular among FixYa’s gadgetphiles.
Con: It’s not a looker. The Zip-Thru’s style is utterly utilitarian, something that may not fly (ha ha) with ladies and more fashionable gents. It also doesn’t have a lot of extra space for personal items, something that becomes more important as the number of carry-ons that airlines allow shrinks. Quite frankly, unzipping the Zip-Thru and laying it flat doesn’t save much labor over opening a conventional laptop bag and removing the laptop. At $99.99, you’ll have to decide for yourself if the time saved is worth the money spent.
Recommendation: I’m not exactly a style maven, but I cannot recommend that the Zip-Thru move forward. Its appeal is just too limited, both fashion-wise and where function is concerned. Any time and effort you might save passing through airport security would probably be eclipsed by the time spent transferring all your stuff into this bag before you fly.
