The Pitch: Actiontec Electronics says that the NextGen Mega Plug can turn any electrical outlet into a high-speed internet connection with speeds up to 200Mbps. The device allows a user to instantly network TiVo, PS3s, Xbox 360s, and other multimedia-intensive devices. Up to 16 MegaPlug adapters can be added throughout the home.

Pros: You can instantly network multimedia-intensive devices without having to string wires around your home, worry about signal strength, or have any networking knowledge.

Cons: Price: The two device set is $169.99. Most devices come with Wi-Fi built-in or can use a standard Wi-Fi adapter, so this seems a bit pricey.

Recommendation: I like the idea of networking with ease via an electrical outlet. Networking is still something that scares a lot of people, so Actiontec may have found a nice niche with the NextGen Mega Plug. These types of plugs been around for a while but haven’t handled multimedia in the past. For these reasons I recommend it move on in the competition.

if this thing is cheaper, i think there would be more customers. But pricing at 169.99 is kind of too high for domestic consumers.

this device might be useful during a trip, especially when you bring 3 laptops to a hotel, you can have a fast wireless connection at 200mbps instead of the 54mbps ad-hog(computer default). I believe that anyone would be able to find an electric source in the hotel room!

Our Host: Robin Raskin

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
