The Pitch: Audio Bone touts its headphones as a safer, more convenient way to listen to music. Traditional headphones can be uncomfortable and even dangerous, since they block your ears and prevent you from hearing your environment. Audio Bone loops over your ear and transmits music through your bones directly to your inner ear. They say that this method is safer for your eardrums as well, preventing some of the hearing loss associated with traditional headsets.

Pros: Safety, both for your ears and for the rest of your body. Hearing loss is a growing problem and people who listen to loud music with traditional headsets are particularly vulnerable. Not being able to hear what’s going on around you may cost you more than just your hearing, as anyone who has almost stepped in front of an oncoming bus while listening to their iPod knows. Audio Bone is much more comfortable than earbuds, something that those of us with freakishly tiny ears can appreciate. As a FixYa user, Brad, puts it “if the headphones are uncomfortable, you’ll stop using them… trust me.” Audio Bone can also be used to listen to music underwater, giving it a clear advantage over traditional headsets, which can only be used to electrocute yourself underwater.

Cons: It takes a while to get used to, and even then may not provide sound quality good enough for true audiophiles. Users also complain that your jaw kind of vibrates as you use it. While the sensation may be amusing and something you eventually get used to, it may also make you want to rip your head off.

Recommendation: At $189, the Audio Bone is just too pricey too move forward. While the idea of being able to listen to music while swimming without electrocuting myself is incredibly appealing, the sticker shock may just kill me.

Our Host: Robin Raskin
...is a veteran tech journalist and founder of Living in Digital Times. She created Last Gadget Standing.

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
