Every year brings new trends to the CES show floor. What are the biggest crazes of this year’s show? Read on to find out what will be all the rage in 2009.

1. Mice Be Gone: Typing is a learned skill. Mousing required separate hardware (the mouse). But everyone can point their finger and touch a screen. Touch screens — in phones, in PCs, in gaming systems, in billboards, and public places — are the new rage in computers and other electronic devices. And while touch screen technology has been around for awhile, the new buzz is a direct function of Apple envy. The iPhone and the iPod touch have made touch screens the status symbol of 2009.

2. HD Camcorders Big and Small: Time to relegate your standard definition video to 16mm film status. CES will showcase a bevy of HD camcorders from the itty-bitty Mino and Kodak Zi6 to the unbelievably feature-packed new videocams with image stabilization, face detection, and other goodies expected from manufacturers like Sony, Samsung, and others. New CMOS technology is the catalyst here.

3. Home Entertainment Convolutions: The industry will be second-guessing what you want to do with your media. Stream it through different rooms in your home? Play it on your TV? Share it with friends? Create music videos? Watch HD streaming movies? Whatever your preference, you’re going to be in control, so look for manufacturers like Linksys, Intel, Logitech, and others to jury-rig a solution for you. Hope it comes with installation!

4. Content, Meet Gadget: Cutting-edge content developments in the broadcast and entertainment industry will merge. Over the last few years, content providers have been flocking to CES to figure out how to best package and distribute their wares. This year, Disney, Sony, and Activision executives are all keynoting. Need I say more?

5. Smartphones: Who cares whether they can make a reasonable phone call? This year’s phones are PCs in your pocket. They surf the web, manage your business, and entertain all at once. Competition between the new Blackberrys, Samsung, LG, and other iPhone wannabes will be hot.

6. Game Power: The ubiquitous Wii, Playstation (does Blu-ray make it too expensive?), and a new, low-priced Xbox will vie to be king in your living room, but your mobile device is turning into a great game machine, too. The fastest growing segment of the market? Women and casual gamers, marking a real shift in demographics.

7. Internet TV: Internet TV means watching what you want, when you want it, and on the device of your choosing. You’ll see new platforms for video publishing, new means of distribution, and a maze of choices, because we “like to watch.”

8. Green Tech: Despite an economy that’s in the pits, the race to create low-energy-consumption PC products made without the use of dangerous materials is still happening. The Intel Atom, powering most of the netbooks, is looking mighty good. Look for a new breed of CE device to help do everything from standard computing to measuring your energy consumption.

9. Wireless Everything: Headsets, printers, cameras, speakers, and other peripherals continue to cut the cords and head towards a ubiquitous wirelessness. WiMax is slowly on the rise.

10. Aware Products: The ultimate in personalization is a technology that recognizes you and knows your mind. GPS-type technology, as well as cell-phone localization, will know where you are, and hence deliver what you need. Products that recognize your viewing preferences, your preferred home-control settings, and more will be on display. Watch for location-based advertising and geo-tagging of photos to pave the way.

What do you think the hottest trends of the CES Show will be?

Our Host: Robin Raskin
...is a veteran tech journalist and founder of Living in Digital Times. She created Last Gadget Standing.

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
