The Pitch: High-fidelity without the high price; iharmonix’s Platinum ev-Series Headphones dress their neodymium magnets and 11mm drivers in stainless steel and gun-metal alloy, yet still carry a $59.95 tag. Compatible with any MP3 player, including Apple’s iPod, they’re a straightforward way to improve your audio quality.
Pros: The in-line volume control is a neat touch, and the ev-Series do look good, if a little blinged. It’s sound quality, though, that iharmonix are looking to cash in on, and there’s no denying that the ev-Series will easily best your MP3 player’s standard cans.
Cons: The looks are an acquired taste, and the volume control adds just another source of interference into the audio path. If you’re going to upgrade your headphones, we’d lean toward making a real investment in some audiophile cans and re-ripping your music in lossless.
Recommendation: At a shade under sixty bucks, the ev-Series fails to differentiate at one of the most hotly-contested price-points. The looks are try-hard and the “dynamic” neodymium smacks of sales hyperbole; they don’t go forward.
