The Pitch: Abbee Records is a home stereo that allows you to record live radio broadcasts, shed the commercials, and keep the music. The manufacturer of the device says think TiVo for the radio. The music is recorded over-the-air and sent to a portable music player included with the kit. Also included are all accessories needed to listen to the music in your car. The MSRP for the system is $249.99.
Pros: Music fans will like this because it allows you to record tracks that you like from over-the-air FM broadcasts and sheds the commercials. That means you are left with nothing but music to listen too.
Cons: The manufacturer of Abbee Records FM Radio says that they are fully compliant with the Audio Home Recording Act. I don’t see how the gadget will avoid the ire of the RIAA.
Recommendation: If you are a music fan, you may want to jump on this while you can. I can’t help but think as slick as the gadget is, RIAA will have it off the shelves almost as soon as it hits stores. The cool factor of the system was enough to get it into the semi-final round, but it has limited appeal and therefore will not move into the finals in our competition.
