The Pitch: So apparently, Americans kill close to one-third of all plants within the first year of purchase. EasyBloom aims to stop these senseless deaths by diagnosing ailing plants and recommending appropriate ones for whatever patch of dirt you want to beautify. Let their Plant Sensor gather data for a day, then use their online library of over 5,000 plants to get recommendations on what will grow in your neck of the woods.
Pros: Priced at $59.95, the EasyBloom is the perfect present for that aunt of yours whom you love, but have no idea what to give for Christmas. Both the product and the site are very user-friendly, and the EasyBloom has a fun look. Dozens of FixYa users have turned to gardening aids such as grow lights to keep their precious plants alive, something that could be avoided if they used the EasyBloom to pick a more appropriate plant in the first place.
Cons: Customers complain about the limited plant library and the inability to add additional plant species. And while its appearance owes a lot to Apple, the EasyBloom currently doesn’t support Mac (they hope to have it by the end of ‘08). There is also no option to save data to a hard drive.
Recommendation: The PlantSense EasyBloom should absolutely move forward. It’s both utilitarian and fun, and is appropriate for a wide range of people. Customization freaks will love the three different petal attachments that allow you to coordinate your PlantSense with your planter.
