The Pitch: Some robots are really useful; others provide great companionship. WowWee’s newest product, Joebot, is one of the latter. Joebot is a walking, talking, interactive buddy, and with more personality than robots before him. Joebot is filled with comedic chatter, kind of like having your own cartoon friend.

Packed with tons of modes and features, Joe can be your beatbox buddy, dancing along as you tap out a beat that he can then repeat perfectly. Or he can roam freely in Battle Mode, to track and blast obstacles with his LED hands. Really lonesome? You can even square off with him using your TV remote controller!

The Joebot robot features fast, fluid walking motion, voice-activated Program Mode, and sequence playback allowing him to also respond to key phrases. he even has obstacle avoidance and fall detection. His various modes include Wandering, Patrol, Talk, Guard, and Battle modes.

Pros: Joebot takes state-of-the-art consumer robotics to a new place. The character really has some personality and walks more realistically than any previous versions.

Cons: Those with a practical streak will have a hard time justifying the cash to buy a robotic friend.

Recommendation: You really need to see this guy in action. Move ‘em into the finals.

Our Host: Robin Raskin
...is a veteran tech journalist and founder of Living in Digital Times. She created Last Gadget Standing.

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
