The Pitch: Most portable scanners available today force consumers to choose between price and functionality: They either offer a cheap partial solution or an overpriced powerhouse. The Fujitsu ScanSnap S300, on the other hand, brings all the functionality consumers need at a reasonable price. Whether the goal is to get rid of paper clutter at home, or scan business cards, receipts, or business documents on the go, this scanner provides a truly simple option for going digital. The Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 is also the world’s smallest double-sided, color ADF (auto document feeder) scanner.

Pros: The ScanSnap is a snap to use. You can archive your paper files and go completely digital without much sweat or anxiety. It seems to handle volume work quite well, and even in today’s world of LinkedIn and social networks, you know you’re going to need to digitize those business cards you keep getting handed to you. Scanning is probably the most underrated application in computing, but Fujitsu seems to have removed most obstacles to it becoming as accessible as a mouse.

Cons: The ScanSnap is pitched at somewhere between home and office use, and is priced accordingly (high). So, although it’s an attractive product, it’s priced such that most people will have to think it through before making a purchase.

Recommendation: This is a must-have device for any gadget enthusiast. It may not be cheap, but it isn’t expensive either, when you consider all the benefits that it brings. I think it should go through to the next round. Off you go!

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
