January 8th was TigerDirect and CompUSA’s 12th Annual Build Your Own PC Race at the Wynn in Las Vegas, from from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. Every year at CES, TigerDirect and CompUSA (and sponsors AMD and Systemax) get together to have a little fun and give a little money to charity. Up to 30 tech journalists race to see who can build a PC the fastest.
Lined up in a Wynn ballroom are tables loaded with disassembled PCs. When the race begins, the contestants scramble to connect all the cards, drives, monitors, keyboards and mice in a top of the line PC. The first one to do so wins $10,000 to give to a charity of his or her choice.
Also, each PC assembled gets shipped off to the selected school or charity chosen by the contestant, so even the losers can feel like winners. Insider tip: the PC Race consistently has some of the best food at the show — maybe that’s how they get so many journalists to compete!
This year’s award went to Al Hernandez, Technology & Consumer Reporter at Fox Morning News, who built his PC in less than six minutes. I was #19 at about 10 minutes and change. Potential stalkers can look for me at the 00:39 mark.
