The Pitch: Bug Labs promises to release your inner inventor by supplying you with modular and programable electronic units that can be assembled to create new devices. The system centers around the BUGbase, which accepts up to four modular add-ons. Currently available modules are the BUGview display, the BUGmotion motion detector and accelerometer, the BUGlocate GPS module, and the BUGcam2MP 2-megapixel camera. Your new creation can be programmed with BUG’s completely open source software platform, which works with Java. The BUGbase sells for $349.00 and modules range from $59 to $119 in cost.
Pros: You can build your own electronic devices without picking up a soldering iron. For those of us not named Philip Torrone, that’s good news.
Cons: There is a limited selection of modules currently available, and the system is somewhat physically large. And even at the discounted bundled price of $649, it’s an expensive toy.
Recommendation: For the true gadget lover, especially one with a do-it-yourself streak, the BUG system is a unique product, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the venerable Heathkit HERO. While I think it has fairly limited market potential, I’ll still recommend it for the next stage of Last Gadget Standing — even if only for sentimental reasons.
