The Pitch: Ooma’s Telo is the second generation of their VoIP telephony system that provides unlimited U.S. calling for residential users, but a relatively high initial cost. The new version features a sleek and simplified design with a DECT 6.0 handset and ability to link with Google Voice.

Pros:

  • Uses DECT 6.0, so it won’t interfere with Wi-Fi networks
  • Bluetooth connection for address book synchronization and cellphone calls
  • HD voice

Cons:

  • High initial cost - (Ooma Telo - $249.99; Ooma Telo Handset - $49.99)

Recommendation:
Even with many people depending on their cell phone for all calling, there’s still a market for VoIP. Ooma has a unique approach and deserves to move forward.

I have had the Ooma Hub for 6 months and the sound quality is brilliant and it has already paid for itself. I recommend it to all my friends and family. Keep spreading the word so this great free phone service doesn't go away!

Once this pays for itself (4 months) I'll save $750 a year, every year I own it. It doesn't get better or easier

I've had this for two months now. Call quality is excellent. Still waiting for the Google Voice support but that's not a biggy and I'm sure it's coming soon. Definitely a good option if you want to get rid of expensive landline but still want the phone on your wall to work. 4 more months for me and this thing has paid for itself! I certainly don't miss that stupid, over-complicated monthly bill from SBC/Ameritech/AT&T or whatever they're calling themselves now.

Good deal. Get a lifetime number (as long as company exists) and take it every where you go! Can't beat the unlimited calls nationwide!

Our Host: Robin Raskin
...is a veteran tech journalist and founder of Living in Digital Times. She created Last Gadget Standing.

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
