The Pitch: According to OCZ Technologies’ PR-speak, The OCZ Agility EX Series makes SLC (single-level cell) NAND-based storage truly affordable in a solid state drive for the first time. The death knell for mechanical hard drives rang out earlier this year, with the release of Windows 7; finally, SSD is going to enter the mainstream as it has crossed the three barriers of affordability, reliability, and performance.
Pros: SSDs are significantly faster than mechanical hard drives. They are much more reliable, with MTBF (mean time between failure) measured in the millions of hours as opposed to high hundreds of thousands of hours with mechanical hard drives. In addition, mobile SSDs are not affected by impact and shock: you can drop a laptop with an SSD and you will not have to worry about lost data.
Cons: OCZ’s definition of “truly affordable” is still probably a bit different from the rest of ours. At $400 for 60gb, we’re still into the realm of “eep… gotta rethink my budget,” but it is tantalizingly close to the realm of “I would recommend this to my dad…”
Recommendation: I’m a firm believer in the power of SSD. The writing is on the wall: SSD is the future, and OCZ is on the cutting edge of this hot tech. My recommendation: Move on.
