The Pitch: The Acer Aspire 5738D is the world’s first 3D notebook. It’s capable of providing a 3D theatre-like experience for just about anything you can throw at it: movies, photos, games, and more. The secret sauce is the display. It’s been coated with a special 3D film that clings to the panel, pixel by pixel. The viewer wears a set of polarized eyeglasses that provide the 3D experience. The installed software includes a TriDef Media Player for playback of video and pictures and a way-cool tool called TriDef Ignition. It can take your 2D and convert it to 3D (content must support DirectX 9 and above.)
And 3D is not the only winning feature. The 5738D has a 15.6-inch HD display and a 3rd-generation Dolby Home Theater, augmented with Acer’s own TubaBass and True 5.1 sound enhancers. The Aspire 5738D supports all of the communications you’ve come to expect: Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, and optional Bluetooth 2.0. An integrated Acer Crystal Eye webcam lets you keep in touch with friends and family through video chat. Final touch? The notebook case is a memorable sapphire blue! With the 5738D, Acer launches another “first kid on the block” notebook.
Pros: One of the most life-like 3D expressions yet, plus it provides great tools to create your own 3D.
Cons: Still relies on 3D glasses which can get lost or break. With a 15-inch screen it seems a bit bulky.
Recommendation: This is going to be the year of three dimensions, and Acer is leading the pack.
