The Pitch: Expanding on their expertise in graphics processing, NVIDIA is taking on the small-form gaming computer with the NVIDIA Tegra-powered ICD Ultra tablet computer. Thanks to NVIDIA’s power-efficient yet power-packed Tegra T20 processor, the Ultra is a multimedia powerhouse packed into a package that’s smaller than even the smallest laptops. The Ultra lets you explore the web, chat up your friends, check your emails, watch HD video, and play streaming web video on it’s 7-inch touchscreen. It’ll even stream HD media to your home theater system or TV. And, like any good tablet, the Ultra packs all that power into a sleek and slim package less than an inch thick (18mm).

With a 1Ghz Tegra processor, the Ultra makes quick work of any multimedia task you can throw at it. And, thanks to the Adobe Flash Player 10.1, the Ultra does well with Flash websites. As for keeping connected, the Ultra offers Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi b/g, and USB 2.0 as standard. For the mobile road warriors out there, a wireless 3G data connection and GPS are optional.

Pro: The rest of the world has gone ultramobile, now it’s gamers’ turn. You gota love the combo of power and portability in such a tight little package.

Con: It doesn’t have an optical drive, so you’ll have to either download your games or hook up an external drive to load and play disc-dependent games. It is hard to imagine a hardcore gamer using this as a primary play-station.

Recommendation: We’d love so see what this little gamer can do. We think it should move on to the finals.

Here's what I don't get: Why do makers think that a tablet should contain any actual hardware? Isn't some sort of wi-fi "dumb terminal" (using some sort of USB transmitter in your PC) about as obvious as the nose on your face?

Microsoft already tried that. Epically failed.
  • I'd love a "Dash"

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
