The Nest Learning Thermostat learns about you and your home to automatically turn itself down when you’re away, guide you to energy-efficient temperatures when you’re home, and free you from programming hassles by creating a customized temperature schedule. With heating and cooling accounting for approximately 50%—or more than $1,000 per year—of the average household energy bill, Nest can make a noticeable difference by helping you reduce your energy consumption. Just answer a few setup questions, make a week’s worth of temperature adjustments, and Nest takes it from there.

Because Nest has Wi-Fi built in, you can control it from your laptop, smartphone or tablet. Change the temperature, adjust your schedule and check your energy usage.

Nest tracks the temperatures you typically set and guides you to more energy-efficient ones, displaying the Nest Leaf as a reward when you set the temperature to a more energy-efficient setting. The Auto-Away feature can sense when you’re not home and will lower the temperature, saving energy. You can also check Energy History to see how much you saved.

It is difficult for a thermostat to instill gadget-lust, especially in a list of desirable products like this, but the design is beautiful and the technology should be a legal requirement for all new buildings. I cant see any of the other products being able to offer the social benefit that this one can.

While a lot of the other devices in the competition are pretty neat, they will be easily replaced next year. This one changes how we interact with our home in a manner that makes life more comfortable as well as potentially saving money on energy costs. Well thought out design and interface but a bit expensive, hopefully the price will become more affordable as it catches on.

2013 Press Release

About

Last Gadget Standing

Last Gadget Standing looks for products that are more than just a flash in the pan. They are products that will endure and are pioneering the ways in which the digital world will change. Any exhibitor at CES can enter a product into the Last Gadget Standing competition--though it must be a device, not a service or software. Products need to have shipped during 2012 or be available for shipping by the end of Q2 of 2013. We honor NDAs and we reserve two spaces for products that have winner potential but won't be announced until the show.

Special Hosts

We're extremely lucky this year to have Gary "Bababooey" Dell'Abate and Jon Hein, of the Howard Stern Wrap Up Show to emcee the Last Gadget Standing . They love products and they love the CES crowd.
